Roman Numeral Tattoo Generator for Dates and Numbers

Roman numerals are a classic way to carry a date on skin: a birthday, an anniversary or a milestone written in letters that look timeless. This Roman numeral tattoo generator converts a date or a number to numerals instantly, and shows the result in several layouts so you can pick the one you prefer.

Accuracy matters more here than almost anywhere, because one wrong letter changes the number. The converter follows standard rules and warns you when a number or date is out of range, giving you a checked result you can take to your artist.

How it works

Ideas

Examples and ways to use it

A birthday on the wrist

A date like 06.12.1994 becomes VI·XII·MCMXCIV, a compact line that fits comfortably on a wrist or ankle.

A wedding anniversary

Roman numerals for the day, month and year look formal and elegant, especially in a script or traditional face.

A single significant year

Just the year, like MMXXV, is a minimal option for a milestone such as graduation or recovery.

A lucky number

A sports number or a favorite number in Roman form, such as XXIII, works as a bold typographic piece.

Tips

Get better results

  • Verify every numeral. Use number mode to convert each part separately and confirm the result with your artist before the stencil is made.
  • Watch for month-day order. A date written 03.04 means March 4 in the US but April 3 in much of the world, and the numerals will not fix that mix-up.
  • Use separators. Continuous strings like VIXIIMCMXCIV are hard to parse, whereas dots or dashes make each part readable.
  • Keep size in mind. A long date string needs width, so consider a stacked layout or dropping the day if space is tight.
  • Pick a face with distinct I, V and X shapes. Very thin styles can make repeated I characters look like a picket fence at small sizes.

How Roman numerals work

Roman numerals use seven letters: I, V, X, L, C, D and M. Smaller values placed before larger ones subtract, so IV is 4 and IX is 9, and the letters are otherwise added from left to right. There is no zero and the standard system tops out at MMMCMXCIX, which is 3999, so years beyond that cannot be written in the standard form.

Some clocks show 4 as IIII for visual balance, but the standard subtractive form, IV, is what this tool uses. If you want a fresh visual style for the same numerals, see the date tattoo generator for numeric formats or the tattoo font generator for full font comparisons.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a date in Roman numerals?

Convert the day, month and year separately and join them with a separator. For example, June 12, 1994 becomes VI, XII and MCMXCIV.

Why does the converter stop at 3999?

The standard Roman system uses M for 1000 and does not extend beyond three Ms in a row. That makes 3999 (MMMCMXCIX) the largest value it can write.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. Roman numerals have no zero, so 0 cannot be converted. A date with a year, month and day always has values of 1 or higher.

Should I use dots between numerals?

It is a matter of taste. Dots or dashes help people read each part of a date, while a continuous string looks cleaner but can be confusing.

Is IIII or IV correct for 4?

Standard notation uses IV. IIII appears on some clock faces, but the tool follows the subtractive form that most people expect in a tattoo.

Can I trust the result for a tattoo?

The conversion follows standard rules, but always double-check numerals against your source date and have your artist confirm the spelling before they start.

Convert your date, then double-check it

Use the result as a verified reference and confirm each numeral with your artist before your appointment.
